Custom Kitchens

Custom kitchens designed, milled and finished in our own shop on Johnston Street in Guelph, then installed by the same crew that built them. For homeowners in Guelph, Kitchener, Cambridge and Waterloo who want a kitchen made for their room, not pulled from a catalogue.

Cabinet Shop and Renovation Crew

Custom kitchen cabinetry, and the room around it.

Busato Custom Woodworking is a cabinet shop and a renovation company under one roof. When we build a custom kitchen, the cabinet boxes, doors and panels are made in our own shop on Johnston Street in Guelph, sized to your walls rather than to a supplier's standard widths. The same crew then handles the demolition, the trades, the flooring, the tile and the trim, so the cabinetry and the room are finished to one standard.

It suits homeowners planning a real change: a main floor opened up, a peninsula turned into an island, or a tired kitchen taken back to the subfloor and rebuilt. Most of our kitchens are part of larger main floor renovations, and we do not take on backsplash only jobs.

  • 3D design perspectives so you see the kitchen before a cabinet is cut
  • Cabinetry built in our Guelph shop, not ordered out of a catalogue
  • One contract and one crew from demolition to the last piece of trim
  • Accessible layouts and wheelchair access when the project calls for it
How It Runs

How a custom kitchen comes together.

A kitchen goes wrong in the planning, not the install. The drawings, the measurements and the finishes are settled first, then we build to them.

01

Consultation

We come to your home, measure the kitchen and talk through how you cook, where people gather and what bothers you about the room now.

02

3D Design

You see the kitchen as a 3D perspective, with the layout, sightlines and finishes, and sign off before anything is ordered.

03

Shop Build

Cabinet boxes, doors and panels are milled and finished in our shop on Johnston Street in Guelph.

04

Install and Finish

Our crew handles demolition, trades, flooring, tile and trim, installs the cabinetry and hands back a finished kitchen.

Options and Trade Offs

Choosing the details, and what each one asks of you.

Every choice in a custom kitchen gives something and takes something. These are the ones we talk through most often at the design stage.

Island or peninsula

An island gives you a walkway on every side and the most seating, but it needs clear floor all the way around it. A peninsula fits a narrower room and still gives you a counter to sit at, with one side tied to the wall.

Painted or wood finish

Painted shaker doors read clean and bright, and suit white, sage and navy schemes. A natural wood finish warms a room and hides everyday wear better, and it asks for a lighter hand with the rest of the palette.

Glass or solid uppers

Glass fronts lighten a long run of cabinets and show off what is inside, which means what is inside has to be worth showing. Solid doors hide everything and cost less to keep looking tidy.

Cabinets to the ceiling

Running the uppers and crown moulding right to the ceiling adds storage and removes the dusty ledge on top. The trade off is a step stool for the highest shelf.

Quartz or natural stone

Quartz is consistent from slab to slab and needs no sealing. Marble and other natural stone give each kitchen its own veining, but they need sealing and care around lemon, wine and vinegar.

Open shelving

A few open shelves keep a small kitchen feeling open and put everyday dishes within reach. Everything on them is on show, though, and they collect dust that cabinet doors would keep out.

Cost

What a custom kitchen costs, and what drives the number.

No two custom kitchens cost the same, because no two rooms are the same size or start in the same condition. We price every kitchen from one fixed scope, agreed after the consultation and the 3D design, so the price stops moving once you have signed off.

Most of our kitchens are built as part of main floor renovations, and those projects typically run from $50,000 to $200,000 depending on how much of the floor changes.

Where We Build

Custom kitchens in Guelph, Kitchener, Cambridge and Waterloo.

Everything is built in one shop in Guelph and installed by one crew, so a kitchen in Cambridge gets the same cabinetry and the same finish as one down the street from us.

Guelph

Our shop is at 44 Johnston Street, so Guelph kitchens make the shortest trip from the shop floor to your house. We build across the city, from condos where cabinets and crown moulding run to the ceiling to make the most of a compact kitchen, to family homes where the old kitchen comes out down to the subfloor. See our Custom Kitchens in Guelph.

Kitchener

Kitchener is about half an hour from the shop along Highway 7. Plenty of Kitchener houses, from the older streets near downtown to split levels built a few decades ago, still have a closed in kitchen, and opening that wall is often where the project starts. Because we are the cabinet shop and the renovation crew, the new layout and the cabinetry are planned together. See our Custom Kitchens in Kitchener.

Cambridge

Cambridge brings together Galt, Preston and Hespeler, and their older neighbourhoods are full of solid houses with kitchens sized for a different era. Those rooms rarely line up with standard cabinet widths, which is exactly where cabinetry built to the actual walls earns its keep. See our Custom Kitchens in Cambridge.

Waterloo

Waterloo sits just past Kitchener, within the forty minute radius most of our projects fall inside. Many Waterloo kitchens in newer subdivisions already have the floor space for an island but came with builder grade boxes. Replacing those with cabinetry made in our Guelph shop, laid out around how the family actually uses the room, changes the whole main floor without moving a wall.

Questions

Custom kitchen questions.

The questions homeowners ask most before they start a kitchen, answered the way we would answer them at your table.

What is the average cost of a custom kitchen?

There is no honest single average, because the size of the room, how much of the layout moves and the finishes you choose change the number more than anything else. Most of our kitchens are part of main floor renovations that typically run from $50,000 to $200,000. We give you a fixed price for your kitchen after the consultation and 3D design.

Can I redo my kitchen for $10,000?

Not with a custom kitchen. $10,000 can cover paint, new hardware or a counter replacement on the cabinets you have. Cabinetry built for your room, installed with new counters, flooring and trim, sits well above that.

Can you redo a kitchen for $30,000?

It depends on the size of the kitchen and how much changes around it. Our custom kitchens are usually part of wider main floor work, so they generally run higher. The consultation is where we tell you plainly what your budget can and cannot cover before any design work starts.

How much should a 10x10 kitchen remodel cost?

A 10 by 10 kitchen is a common way to compare cabinet prices, but real kitchens are rarely that simple. The price follows the amount of cabinetry, the door style and finish, the countertop material, and whether plumbing, gas or walls move. We measure your actual room and price the kitchen you are really getting.
