Trim Work
Trim work and finish carpentry in Guelph, Kitchener, Cambridge and Waterloo: baseboards, door and window casing, crown moulding and panelled interior doors, installed by the same crew that builds our kitchens and renovations.

The trim that decides whether a room reads custom.
Casing, crown, baseboard and doors are the last things to go into a room and the first things people notice. Tight mitres, even reveals and profiles that suit the house are what separate a renovation that looks finished from one that looks done in a hurry.
Busato Custom Woodworking is a cabinet shop and a renovation company under one roof, so trim is never an afterthought handed to whoever is free. It is planned with the rest of the project and installed by the crew that built the room, whether that is a custom kitchen, a finished basement or a whole main floor being brought up to one standard.
- Baseboards, door and window casing, and crown moulding
- Panelled interior doors, hung and cased
- Trim matched to the cabinetry so the room reads as one design
- Planned with the rest of your renovation, not tacked on at the end
Every piece that finishes a room.
Trim work covers more than baseboard. These are the parts of a room's finish carpentry we plan and install.
Baseboards
From a simple modern profile to a tall, layered baseboard that suits an older home. Scribed to uneven floors so there are no gaps to fill with caulk.
Door and window casing
Casing sized to the room and the ceiling height, with mitres or head casings that match through the house, so every opening reads the same way.
Crown moulding
Crown at the ceiling, and crown run up to the ceiling on kitchen cabinetry so the uppers look built in rather than hung on the wall.
Interior doors
Panelled interior doors, singles and doubles, hung square with even gaps and cased to match the rest of the trim.
Trim through a whole floor
Matching the baseboard, casing and doors through every room of a main floor, so a renovation does not leave one new room next to three old ones.
Trim that meets cabinetry
Where trim meets kitchen cabinets, vanities and built ins, the details are worked out together, because we build the cabinetry too.
Choosing trim for your home.
The right trim depends on the age of the house, the ceiling height and how the rooms are used. These are the choices we talk through most.
Paint grade or stain grade
Painted trim is the most common choice and hides joints cleanly. Stained wood trim shows the grain and warms a room, but every joint and every board has to be clean because nothing covers it.
MDF or solid wood
MDF is stable and paints smoothly, which suits most painted trim in dry rooms. Solid wood is tougher where it gets knocked or wet, and it is the only option if the trim is going to be stained.
Tall or standard baseboard
A taller baseboard suits higher ceilings and larger rooms and looks deliberate. In a low basement or a small room, a shorter profile keeps the walls from feeling squat.
Simple or detailed profiles
Clean, flat profiles suit modern homes and are quick to keep clean. Layered, detailed profiles suit traditional rooms and older houses, and they need more care to install well.
Solid core or hollow core doors
Solid core doors feel heavier, close with a quieter sound and block more noise between rooms. Hollow core doors are lighter and cost less, and are fine for closets.
Plain walls or panelling
Panelling or wainscoting adds depth to a dining room, a hallway or a stairwell. Plain walls with good casing and baseboard often do more for a room than panelling everywhere.
What trim work costs, and what moves the price.
Trim is priced by what is installed and how much care the house needs, not by the room. We price it as part of one fixed scope, agreed with the rest of your project, so the number does not move once you have signed off.
- How much is being replacedA few rooms of baseboard, or the casing, doors and baseboard through a whole floor.
- Profiles and materialTall, layered and solid wood profiles cost more to buy and to install than simple MDF.
- DoorsThe number of doors, solid or hollow core, and whether frames need adjusting.
- Condition of walls and floorsOut of square openings and uneven floors take more scribing and fitting.
- PaintingWhether the trim is primed, filled and painted as part of the job.

Trim work in Guelph, Kitchener, Cambridge and Waterloo.
One crew out of our Guelph shop, so the trim is installed to the same standard as the cabinetry and the rest of the renovation.
Guelph
Guelph has everything from century stone houses near downtown to new subdivisions at the edges of the city, and the trim should suit the house. Our shop on Johnston Street keeps us close for the careful fitting that older, out of square Guelph homes usually need.
Kitchener
Kitchener is about half an hour from the shop along Highway 7. In older Kitchener homes, trim often has to match or sympathise with original casings that are still in place, while newer homes usually want the builder grade trim replaced throughout.
Cambridge
The older parts of Galt, Preston and Hespeler are full of houses whose original trim has been patched over the years. Replacing it consistently through a floor, with profiles that suit the age of the house, brings the whole interior back together.
Waterloo
Waterloo is just past Kitchener, inside the forty minute radius most of our work falls in. Many homes in Waterloo's newer subdivisions have tall ceilings with small, standard trim. Taller baseboards, wider casing and crown sized to the ceiling height are among the simplest ways to make those rooms feel finished.

Trim work questions.
The questions homeowners ask most about trim and doors, answered plainly.
How much does it cost to install an interior door with trim?
It depends on the door, the frame and the casing. A solid core panelled door costs more than a hollow core one, and an opening that is out of square takes longer to hang properly. We price doors as part of the whole project, alongside the rest of the trim, rather than as a single door on its own.
How much does it cost to install trim around a door?
Casing a door is quick when the wall and frame are true and slower when they are not, and a wide or layered profile takes more time than a simple one. Because casing is usually replaced through a whole floor at once, we price it with the baseboard and doors so every opening matches.
Is MDF or solid wood better for trim?
For painted trim in dry rooms, MDF is stable, straight and paints smoothly. Solid wood is better where trim gets knocked, wet or stained, such as entryways, bathrooms or stain grade rooms. Many homes use both, chosen room by room.
Should trim be replaced when you renovate?
If the flooring changes, the baseboard almost always has to come off, and it is the best time to replace it. Replacing the casing and doors at the same time keeps the renovated rooms consistent, instead of leaving new floors next to old, dated trim.
